SPIKE FIDDLE – RABABA

Egypt, 20th century.

Spike fiddle, of uncertain origin. The oldest known documents are Arabic texts from the 9th and 10th centuries. Al-Jahiz ibn Khurdadhbih and Al Fàràbi, which presents the first description of a bowed instrument.

The handle rests on a wrought iron spike. The sound box is half a coconut.
