PROCESSIONAL CELLO

Cello or processional bass. France, 19th century.

Extremely rare instrument used to accompany hymns during religious ceremonies.

Without much commercial value, these instruments most often disappeared as soon as the harmonium was adopted.

Plane tree background. Oak veneer sides. Spruce top.

Ritual formulas inscribed along the volute: “Deo Gratias” and “Nihil sine Deo”.
